Math Games – Number Sequences (Part 1 of 3)

If you have ever taken an IQ test, you with the type of question for which you are presented with a sequence of numbers, letters, shapes or symbols, and asked: “What comes next? In this series we will mainly focus on series of numbers, as it answered mainly on the basis of mathematics, and two important questions. First, this kind of “serial numbers” question of a measure of general intelligence, mathematical skills or the ability distributions to reproduce? Second, it is possible techniques that learn to increase your performance in this type of serial number working?

The answers to these questions are important because IQ tests are designed to measure innate intelligence, rather than learned skills. Increasingly, children and adults with the use of IQ tests at key points will encounter in their lives. Your results can make a huge impact on their academic progress or professional, such as scholarships, placement in school technical college or a promotion at work. It is not surprising that some parents would do well, “Coach,” as their children to do in an IQ test in order to improve their performance. However, there is a real risk that can be a “baby box” with an IQ test score will be artificially inflated in a situation where they are doomed to failure, that their true intelligence is far from the promise of their IQ score measured. If you encourage your children engage in “What’s next? Math games, it is best seen as a fun activity, can improve their mathematical skills, not their IQs addressed.

Follow the simple arithmetic

In mathematics, a sequence of numbers, where is the difference between the two numbers in the order the same (in mathematical terms, a constant) called an arithmetic progression or arithmetic. The simplest of these is the progression:

2nd January 3 April May 6

What is the difference (the difference between two adjacent numbers in the order) 1.

The common difference in an arithmetic progression can be either positive or negative whole numbers or fractions, so that the following are all the arithmetic:

9 8 7 6 5 4 3

1st March 5 July 11 September

0.5 1.0 1.5 2.0 2.5

100 90 80 70 60 50

With common difference -1, 2, 0.5 and -10 or

Presented with “What’s next? Sequence Number:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 _ _

Most children who complete the order without reference to mathematical principles, because they recognize that the number in the format of “counting” is used because it is being taught at home or in elementary mathematics. Many children are able to complete complex arithmetic sequences with the same filtering approach, apparently without charge or appreciate the significance of the difference of the sequence. For children who do not identify trends in numbers so easily, is the mathematical approach, the difference between two adjacent pairs of numbers in the series to be calculated. If its the same thing and seems uniformly to the entire sequence, it is in fact a simple arithmetic progression. Tracking numbers of the sequence can then be calculated by adding the value of the difference in the last number of the sequence.

In the next article we will be more complex arithmetic series, where math will consider more important than the ability to reproduce the distributions will be.
